11R22.5 and 295/75R22.5 are two of the most common truck tire sizes, and they are easy to mix up. They share a 22.5-inch rim diameter but are not the same tire. Here is how they differ.
What the names mean
- 11R22.5: the nominal section width is 11 inches (about 279 mm), R is for radial construction, and the nominal rim diameter is 22.5 inches (571.5 mm).
- 295/75R22.5: the nominal section width is 295 millimeters (about 11.6 inches), 75 is the aspect ratio, R is for radial construction, and the rim diameter is 22.5 inches (571.5 mm).
Both use the rim diameter in inches, but the first is written in inches throughout and the second mixes millimeters and inches. These definitions come from Toyo Tires’ commercial data book.
Side by side
Toyo’s data book includes a “Comparison of dimensions” table that covers both sizes. The values below are from that table for load range G (14 ply rating). The metric figures are our conversions.
| Measure | 11R22.5 | 295/75R22.5 |
|---|---|---|
| Overall diameter | 41.5 in (1,054 mm) | 39.9 in (1,013 mm) |
| Loaded radius | 19.3 in (490 mm) | 18.7 in (475 mm) |
| Revolutions per mile | 501 (311 per km) | 517 (321 per km) |
| Maximum single load, load range G | 6,175 lb (2,801 kg) at 105 psi (724 kPa) | 6,175 lb (2,801 kg) at 110 psi (758 kPa) |
Conversions use 1 in = 25.4 mm, 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, 1 psi = 6.894757 kPa and 1 mile = 1.609344 km, rounded. The figures describe Toyo’s tires. Other brands and patterns differ, so use the data sheet for the exact tire you are buying.
What the differences mean
- Height. In these figures the 11R22.5 is about 1.6 inches (41 mm) taller overall than the 295/75R22.5.
- Revolutions per mile. The 295/75R22.5 turns 517 times per mile against 501 for the 11R22.5, about 3% more. Because the two sizes turn a different number of times per mile, check speedometer and gear-ratio effects with your vehicle manufacturer before swapping one size for the other.
- Load. In Toyo’s data both are listed at the same maximum single load for load range G, 6,175 lb (2,801 kg), but at different pressures: 105 psi (724 kPa) for the 11R22.5 and 110 psi (758 kPa) for the 295/75R22.5. Pressure matters, so always follow the markings and the data sheet for your tire.
Which should you order?
Order the size your vehicle and axle are specified for, and match it at each position. Do not assume the two sizes are interchangeable. If you are unsure, send us the size currently on your trucks.
- How to read a truck tire sidewall shows where the size and load range are marked.
- Steer, drive and trailer tires explains the axle position.
